Project risk management is critical. Project risks are actually the most important yet difficult part. It is an integral aspect of the project management processes. Necessary steps are mandatory to be taken to avoid risk for the success of your project. So, it is equally important to know about risks and the ways to manage risks in a proper way.
One cannot avoid risks no matter how hard you try. Risk detection and project risk management are necessary for project success. First of all, “risk identification” is important. You cannot handle a risk if it is not identified in the first place. After the successful identification of risks, project risk management kicks in. It is important to manage these risks so that they do not become threats to your project. Prioritizing risks is as important as risk identification. Each risk cannot be assigned an equal priority.

As a project manager you first need to develop a risk strategy to handle risks effectively. For this, you need to consult with the IT manager or consultant or project team professional. The brainstorming process also involves the project team and even the customer himself and identifies the risks involved in the project that can possibly doom the project. Project risk management revolves around these strategies.
After that, you need to weigh each risk according to the following two factors:
- Risks that are more likely to occur
- Impact on the project
In this way, you can identify and prioritize the risks more effectively.
Types of Risk Strategies
Following are the two main types of risk strategy that should be adopted to handle risks effectively:
- Risk avoidance
- Risk mitigation
Let’s take a look at each one.
Risk Avoidance
Risk avoidance means that some sort of action or steps are taken that will greatly reduce the possibility of the risk to occur or damage the project. Consider the fact that you have an extremely sensitive and confidential data that you do not want to lose and you do not afford to lose that data. In that case you will take steps to avoid any risk that would damage the data.
Risk avoidance is a similar case. Of course this is not always possible to avoid risk and some controlling checks should be implemented to handle the risks if occurred.
Risk Mitigation
Risk mitigation is the act of working to minimize or reduce the impact of risk if occurred. You cannot solely rely on risk avoidance as there is always a chance of risk to occur. Some sort of checks or constraints should be applied to manage risks. You should come up with a plan to deal with the risk so that it cannot damage your sensitive data.
For example, to avoid risk mitigation it is recommended that you backup your data daily instead of monthly. In this way, you can save data on a daily basis and if the system crashes or any mishap occurs you lose the data of just 24 hours and not of the whole month.
