5 Tips to Overcome Writer’s Block

Every author, writer and a scribbler, has to go over a writer’s block, some frequently, while the creative best face this maybe on a less frequent basis. As I am writing this post, I realize that I was clouded by the exact same mental block that I am going to pen down today. I hope to inspire, awaken and encourage you to break the shackles and get going on your next writing project.

The Block

From personal experience, I think, in most of the cases, one hits a brick wall, not being able to come up with a topic to write about is due to many of the following factors –

Too much reading and very less brainstorming about topics worth writing about
Lot of planning, creating and saving drafts with the titles, considering to write on them “someday”

  • Sheer laziness to sit behind a screen and spend the next hour or so researching an interesting topic and blog about it
  • Lack of confidence to produce quality articles and blog posts worth reading about
  • Running out of creativity
  • And the list goes on and on …

5 Tips To Get Past The Writer’s Block

So let’s go over some pointers one can follow to overcome the dreadful writer’s block which has been captivating our creativity so far –

  • Take help of social media : Ask your friends and followers on Facebook / Twitter or any other medium, what would they want you to write about? (Added advantage – You kind of connect with your readers personally when they see a topic that they suggested being written about)
  • Be creative but not handcuffed to it : Yes, pouring your thoughts over something creative is always good to read, but ensure that you just don’t get bogged down by the lack of creative topics around you. Think out of the box.
  • Don’t waste time making drafts : Just saving a title of what you “may” write in the future, is taking you nowhere. Instead, scribble a few lines on that topic and you might end up actually writing the complete article before you know.
  • Explore different forms of writing : As I am typing this, I realize, all my inputs above are taking into consideration only the “article writing” or “blogging” aspects of writing. I guess if you are stuck on to a certain form of writing for quite some time, you have to move on to take a break and change your style of genre of writing completely.
  • Join an online community : Subscribe to some online forums and contracting job boards to take up small time gigs to open up your mind and help you diversify your portfolio of writing. Remember variety is the essence of life.

Mind you, the above tips are not the “only” ones worth considering. Since I am writing this post after a long gap of almost 6 months, I could have gone on and on and made this just another boring article. But I wanted to stop there, and actually share as to what got me back here, up and blogging. What inspired me to come here and put this blog post out? I shall say the last tip up there – I got inspired from an online contracting job board by the name of oDesk.

oDesk is a wonderful platform, at-least from my personal experience so far, for all sorts of writers, authors and bloggers, to set up a profile, give some tests, and make yourself available for small time gigs. The icing on the cake? It pays you too! You can take up a hourly contract or maybe a fixed price one-time project for writing articles, blog posts, reviews, books and much more. There are many such online websites that can help you out to break the barriers of writing and in that process earn you a little reward too.

Wow! Now, that I have to end up this blog post, I am wondering, would it be another 6 months before I can writing something new again, or have I been inspired enough to keep coming back here and get myself to churn more content? Well, we shall see! You can also sift through some tips I have posted on how to promote your writing in order to build your presence and drive more traffic to your content. Click Here.

Till then, how about if you can go ahead and write how would you tackle this writer’s block syndrome, maybe share your experiences and suggestions and come up with a topic relevant to my blog, which I can write about in my next post? So what’s holding you back? Stop reading, go to the comments section below and amaze me and other readers with your part of the story!
